REWARD-BASED TRAINING

Dogs learn more quickly and effectively when they are rewarded for behaviors. The more your dog is rewarded, the more he will want to perform the behavior. Using food and toys to motivate and reward your dog while training will give you accelerated results.

BEHAVIORAL ISSUES
AND MANAGEMENT

When you and your dog are having a problem, the first place to start is prevention and management. It's necessary for you to manage the situation so your dog does not practice innappropriate behavior. Then, the focus will be thinking about what it is you WANT your dog to do, rather then what you don't want your dog to do. We will develop an individualized training program for you and your dog that is do-able for you!

TRAINING IS POSITIVE AND FUN!

I am excited to have this opportunity to share my knowledge of dog training and dog behavior with you. All of GoodDog! Training emphasizes the relationship between the dog and handler. The dog is only half the team! I hope that you will enjoy your dog training experience.

We use only contemporary dog-friendly, reward-based methods . . . no force or punishment or any of the old-fashioned methods of jerking, pulling, or hurting your dog to make them comply.  The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's article on Guidelines on the Use of Punishment with Behavior Problems clearly explains the possible adverse effects of punishment.

Training in a positive way, using food rewards, toys, and praise, leads to a better-trained, happier dog. Plus, you will build a loving and trusting relationship with your dog. You and your dog will enjoy training together because it’s fun . . . and that means you will train more often!

USING A REWARD MARKER
IS FAST AND EFFECTIVE
A reward marker lets your dog know the precise behavior you are rewarding them for. Using a reward marker helps your dog learn more quickly than just using food. It is not possible to get the food reward to your dog fast enough to mark the behavior correctly. Because of the delayed timing, you may be inadvertantly training your dog to do something other than what your objective is.

You can use a clicker, a verbal marker such as a word, or any other sound or signal that you can make easily. Deaf dogs can also be trained using a visual reward marker or vibrating collar. Dolphin trainers often use whistles as a reward marker and many dog-trainers and dog owners use a clicker as a reward marker.

Using a reward marker, such as a clicker, is more effective in teaching the dog what behavior you want than simply using food as a reward. Dogs learn faster than other methods of training.
